N & R Contractors was founded in the early 1960’s by two brothers Norman and Reuben Sutcliffe. At that time the Sutcliffe family were hill farmers working the moorland around Cornholme near Todmorden. The family were hardworking but poor as many were at that time and supplemented their income by delivering coal by horse and cart to the many textile mills in the area.
After completing their National Service Norman and Reuben came together and formed N & R Contractors primarily a demolition and plant hire business. Around that time many local authorities in Lancashire embarked on major housing regeneration schemes clearing back to back and slum properties to make way for new houses.
Norman and Reuben were quick to realise an opportunity and channelled all their resources into providing skilled labour and modern plant and equipment to meet an ever increasing demand. Soon N & R Contractors had gained a good reputation for its work and the company was able to expand carrying out varied work throughout the north west of England.
In April 1972 the company was registered and became N & R Contractors Limited.
Throughout the 1970’s the company continued to grow gaining more and more knowledge and experience on differing demolition methods and techniques. Its workforce grew and remained loyal to the company over the years passing on vital skills to its new employees. The 1980’s and 1990’s saw the decline of the textile industry and the decimation of the coal mining industry. Again new opportunities opened up and the company expanded further now carrying out major demolition works throughout the whole of the North of England.
Sadly Norman died during the early 1990’s, Reuben continued with the company until it was sold to Andrew Brown in September 2003.

Andrew Brown bought the company from Reuben Sutcliffe in September 2003.
Andrew worked in the family quarrying and haulage business up until it was sold in October 1998.
